Superior/Douglas County Featured in Corporate Report Wisconsin

Development projects occurring in Superior/Douglas County and the greater Northland were featured in the October issue of Corporate Report Wisconsin.  Projects highlighted include: the recent expansions at AMSOIL, Graymont, Enbridge, Genesis, the building projects on the UWS campus, the start-up of Exodus Manufacturing and the potential expansion at Murphy Oil.  The article emphasized the fact that the economic expansion occurring in our region "bucked" national and state economic trends.  The entire article can be viewed at: http://www.crwmag.com/CRW3/ReportPDFs/2008/08OctRR.pdf

 

County Wide Business Retention and Expansion Survey Update

Data collection for the Douglas County Business Retention and Expansion Survey was completed recently.  Approximately 90 companies participated in the study by completing an extensive questionnaire.  The data collected will be analyzed by the Wisconsin Department of Commerce. 

A local steering committee will prepare a set of recommendations based on the data analysis.  Organizations represented on the steering committee include: The Development Association, Superior Water Light & Power, Dahlberg Light & Power, East Central Energy, the Superior BID, the City of Superior, Douglas County, The Village of Poplar, the Village of Lake Nebagamon, the Village of Solon Springs, The Chamber, Northwest Wisconsin CEP, Northeast Entrepreneur Fund, UWS, UW-Extension and WITC.  Steering committee members visited business owners to collect the questionnaires and discuss issues of importance.

Preliminary results indicate an overall optimistic outlook on the part of the Douglas County business community.  A presentation of the results and forthcoming recommendations will be conducted later this fall.

Public/Private Partnership Meeting October 15, 2008

Businesses and organizations in Superior/Douglas County are invited to attend a meeting of the newly formed Superior/Douglas County Public/Private Partnership project. The purpose of the project is to ensure community preparedness for disaster threats in our community by: 1) providing businesses with the tools to assess their risks and develop appropriate plans and 2) developing an effective system of coordinated response and resources in times of emergency.

The meeting will be held from 1:30 - 3:00 pm at the WITC Conference Center on October 15. The main focus of the meeting will be to organize steering committees and to begin planning a tabletop exercise in January.

We encourage you to take part in this worthwhile opportunity to enhance the partnerships between the public and private sectors in Superior. This is an excellent opportunity to ensure the safety and growth of our region, through cooperation, planning and prevention.

Superior Days Issues Identification Meeting October 23, 2008

The annual Superior Days trek down to Madison is just around the corner.  s part of the preparation process for the lobbying effort, issues of importance to the region are identified, prioritized and fleshed out.  Issues making the cut are included in our lobbying efforts. 

The Issues Identification Meeting for Superior Days will occur at 7:00 pm on October 23 at the UW-Superior Rothwell Student Center Ballroom.  Parking is available in Lot #2 adjacent to Rothwell Student Center free of charge.

The meeting is a good way to raise issues affecting your business or organization that can be addressed by Wisconsin state government.  Development Association members are encouraged to attend this meeting.  If you are unable to attend the meeting but have an issue you would like included in the Superior Days efforts, please do not hesitate to contact Andy Lisak at 715.392.4749 or lisaka@developmentassociation.com.  Issues can also be submitted online by going to: http://www.superiordays.com
