Member Profile: Northland Foods & Distribution

Combine an empty building with a man who has a passion for his business, along with a group of dedicated employees, and you have Northland Foods & Distribution in its new home in Poplar, WI.

Mike Paul started Northland Foods & Distribution in 1997 when Food Service of America closed the doors of its Superior operations where he worked. He took the best truck driver and the best office person with him to start a new business distributing fresh produce, dairy, cheese and eggs in the old Twin Ports Grocery building.

When Northland Foods & Distribution started it was delivering 100 percent of its product to institutional customers. Today, 90 percent of its deliveries are made to retail customers like stores owned by Miner’s (Super One) and Zups. Customers are located across northern Wisconsin, in Upper Michigan and as far west as Grand Forks and Fargo.

Moving the business to Poplar became a possibility when General Mills closed it's taco shell manufacturing plant there. Moving the business from a 16,000 square foot facility to a set of buildings with 40,000 square feet has left a lot of room for growth. In addition to converting the buildings for cold storage, planning is underway for construction of a freezer in one of the buildings.

Paul credits the Development Association with helping Northland Foods make the move to Poplar and assisting with the company's expansion. “Without the Development Association we would not be here today,” said Paul.

Member Profile: AA Roll Off Service

Steve Christen, owner of AA (Always Available) Roll Off Service, would like you to think of his business as more than a company that provides dumpsters for disposal. AA Roll Off Service puts an emphasis on disposal diversion, making every effort to reutilize materials and minimize the carbon footprint by keeping waste out of landfills.

AA Roll Off Service has 150 dumpsters to serve the Twin Ports and northwestern Wisconsin. While a big part of the business is providing a means of disposal to contractors doing demolition and construction projects, AA Roll Off Service dumpsters are also provided to businesses and home owners.

Typical materials that are processed at AA Roll Off Service’s own processing center include concrete, masonry, cardboard, scrap metal and wood. The wood is then ground into mulch. Some mulch is sent to the Hibbard Facility in Duluth, Minnesota where it is burned as bio-fuel for steam generation. Hard wood mulch (oak pallets, etc.) is used in the landscaping industry.

AA Roll Off Service has been in business for nine years, starting at a location in Duluth.

“When I started, I didn’t have my own property,” said Christen. “The City of Superior and the Development Association were very helpful in starting my business in Superior. They worked with me to find a facility that fit my business. I enjoy the business atmosphere here in Superior.”
