E Bulletin March 2011 -Vol. 7, Issue 2 Articles featured in this issue of the Development Association bulletin include: Member Profile: Dahlberg Light & Power Dahlberg Light & Power Company (DL&P), an
investor-owned electric utility, serves around 12,000 retail customers in
Northwest Wisconsin. While the company is owned by investors who have stock
in the company, DL&P has deep familiar roots. "We are unique in that we are a small family-grown
utility," says DL&P President Dave Dahlberg, who is fourth generation in the
business. The company, which celebrated its 80th anniversary last year, was
started by Dahlberg's great grandfather and three of his sons. "I think our customer service sets us apart," says Dahlberg. "Because we're small, we can react more easily to the needs of our customers." Dahlberg sees value in the Development Association as an active group that unites people working toward economic development. "The Association's knowledge of local history and economic development puts them in the best position for promoting market growth and securing grants for communities and companies that are expanding." Member Profile: DSC Communications DSC Communications was founded in 1995, when
owner, Dale Thompson, purchased the Superior company that was, at the time,
a branch of Motorola Inc. Thompson, who started with Motorola Inc. in the
early 1980s and was the branch manager when he purchased DSC, said the
company's communication services have vastly expanded in the past 16 years.
"When we were owned by Motorola we were only a service and installation company," says Thompson. "Since becoming DSC Communications, we have grown to be a full-service, one-stop shop, providing both service and sales for our customers." As the area's only authorized Motorola Sales and Service Center, DSC Communications employs 15 people in its technical and sales departments, with staff on call 24 hours a day. While DSC Communications provides a wide range of communication services to customers in Northern Minnesota and Northwestern Wisconsin, Thompson explains its specialty is in mobile two-way radio communications for the public safety and commercial industrial markets. Thompson says the Development Association's knowledge of area real estate and resources was extremely helpful in allowing DSC Communications to expand its operations in Superior. "DSC Communications has grown tremendously because of the additional services we're able to provide from this location."
