Member Profile: Thirsty Pagan
Brewing
“We
deliver an enjoyable experience,” said Steve Knauss, owner of Thirsty
Pagan Brewing. “We do pizza and beer the right way.”
Steve and Susan Knauss purchased the Twin Ports Brewery in May 2006 from
Rick and Nancy Sauer. Twin Ports Brewery already had a reputation for
fine food and great micro brewed beer. Thirsty Pagan has only added to
that good reputation.
“I had a good perspective on what I needed to do when we bought the
brewery,” said Knauss. “We didn’t just want to survive as a business –
we wanted to succeed.”
Today, 17 employees share in the success of the business. Along with
nine different micro brewed beers, they serve a menu of 20 different
items including pizza that is, “one of the best in area.” Knauss said
the secret to Thirsty Pagan’s great pizza is the “secret sauce” and
fresh ingredients. The beer menu includes seasonal brews, hand pump
brews (English style) and house pours.
Thirsty Pagan recently invested $70,000 in a new kitchen and expanded
seating. The Development Association assisted the business in getting a
loan.
Daily hours for Thirsty Pagan, located at 1623 Broadway, are from 4 pm
to 2 am, Sunday – Thursday and 4 pm to 2:30 am, Friday – Saturday.
Dining hours are 4 to 10 pm, Sunday – Thursday and 4 to 11 pm, Friday –
Saturday. And, if you want some of that great pizza for your next
office lunch, Thirsty Pagan will deliver to businesses in Superior and
Duluth from 11 am to 1 pm (order 24 hours in advance at 715-394-2500).

Steel’s 18,000 square foot plant on Connors Point tells the story.
Superior Steel is the world’s largest manufacturer of aircraft
firefighter trainers.
Superior Steel has fabricated full-size models of aircraft such
as Boeing 757 passenger planes and C-130 military planes, as well as
stand alone simulators such as wing or engine assemblies for firefighter
training centers and airports around the U.S. The company’s designs for
firefighting simulators are now being used worldwide.
Rusty Hoglund and Don Shaw founded Superior Steel in Duluth in 1986.
The two men had over 37 years of experience in marine manufacturing and
shipbuilding. The company’s first location was in Duluth’s Canal Park.
In 1998, Superior Steel moved to the Port Terminal in Duluth. The
company built a new plant on four acres of land on Connors Point in
2005. The building was designed and equipped to manufacture over-sized
products.
“There was no building in Duluth that could meet our specific needs,”
said Hoglund, “and Wisconsin was user friendly to our type of business.”
Over the years Superior Steel developed a customer base in large
construction, steel mills, power plants and the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers.
Superior Steel employs 21 highly skilled people. A number of employees
are AWS certified welders, qualified to work on high-risk welding
projects. The welds must be able to withstand the heavy loads of the
large-scale projects.
Superior Steel is one of the newest members of the Development
Association.
