Association bulletin include:
MEMBER PROFILE: The Daily
Telegram

The Daily Telegram has been part of Superior and Douglas County for
well over 110 years. Founded by Morgan Murphy, The Daily Telegram has
brought the news of the community and the world to its readers in
northwestern Wisconsin since 1890.
“Our community is fortunate to have had the Murphy family as stewards of
this newspaper for so many years,” said Ken Browall, publisher of The
Daily Telegram. Browall is only the second person from outside the
Murphy family to hold the top management position in the history of the
newspaper.
In May 2004 Knight-Ridder, owners of the Duluth News-Tribune, purchased
the newspaper. Then in July 206, Forum Communications, based in Fargo,
ND, acquired some of Knight-Ridder’s newspapers.
Although The Daily Telegram and the Duluth News -Tribune share some news
content and collaborate on ad sales, Browall said the Superior newspaper
remains independent on its editorial control and often takes a position
that is different than its sister newspaper. The Daily Telegram focuses
on local content that provides its readers with important news they
can’t find anywhere else.
Today, a growing number of its subscribers and readers are going to the
newspaper’s website to get the news. As this trend continues The Daily
Telegram has become a resource to small businesses in the community who
want to establish web-based advertising.
The Daily Telegram is a longtime member and supporter of the Development
Association.
“We believe the Development Association is great for the community,”
said Browall. “The Development Association does a lot behind the scenes
and doesn’t get much credit. You need a strong business community to
keep your community alive and growing.”
MEMBER PROFILE: SMDC Superior

Douglas County residents are fortunate to have quality healthcare
options close to home. St. Mary’s Hospital of Superior and Duluth
Clinic–Superior are part of SMDC Health System. In 2001, these two
providers physically joined their operations to provide comprehensive
care to area residents on one campus.
St. Mary’s, a critical access hospital, provides a variety of medical,
diagnostic and outpatient services to patients, along with 24-hour
emergency care. It also offers a valuable option for people who are
hospitalized for an unexpected illness or a plannd surgery, and find
that they need additional care when it comes time to leave the hospital.
The swing bed program helps patients by providing skilled nursing and
rehab services before transitioning back to their homes. It gives
patients a special environment in which to recover and receive the care
they need.
“We’re so happy to offer this unique service to our community,” says
Barb Wessberg, Interim Administrator for SMHS. “We’re the only swing bed
care program in the Twin Ports.”
The Duluth Clinic-Superior has a number of providers covering the areas
of Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Occupational
Medicine, Behavioral Health and Optometry. There are also many outreach
specialists from other SMDC facilities who see patients daily in
Superior.
The hospital and clinic benefit from the recent successes in recruiting
physicians and other healthcare providers to the Superior area. Many
times, patients can get same-day appointments to see a doctor, physician
assistant or nurse practitioner. “Patient satisfaction and quality care
are our top focus,” Wessberg notes.
