E Bulletin, January 2009 -Vol. 5, Issue 1

Articles featured in this issue of the Development Association bulletin include:

Member Profile: Superior Water, Light and Power

Superior Water, Light and Power (SWL&P) has been providing utility services to the City of Superior and the Douglas County area since 1889. Today, SWL&P has an important role to play in the economic development of the region.

Over 55 percent of the electricity distributed by SWL&P goes to industrial customers and about 21 percent goes to commercial customers. Providing electrical power at rates that support economic development is important to SWL&P.

“We’re interested in growing and supporting economic development in Superior and Douglas County,” said Chris Fleege, President of SWL&P. ‘We want to provide electricity at rates that support economic development and contribute to a good business environment.”

SWL&P is a wholly owned subsidiary of ALLETE, Inc., which is also the parent company of Minnesota Power, BNI Coal and ALLETE Properties. SWL&P purchases 100 percent of its electrical power from Minnesota Power, distributing that power through 312 miles of distribution lines.

In addition to providing electrical power, SWL&P provides natural gas service to the City of Superior and the communities of Lake Nebagamon, Poplar, Solon Springs, Amnicon, Bennett, Brule, Hawthorne, Highland, Maple and Parkland. SWL&P also provides water service to Superior.

With annual revenues of over $66 million (2007) and 90 full time employees, SWL&P has a significant impact on the economy of Superior and Douglas County.

Company Profile: Exodus Manufacturing

In June 2009, the first material handling machine built by Exodus Manufacturing, LLC should be assembled and ready to go to work in the scrap metal industry.

Exodus Manufacturing is expected to build two machines per month in its new plant, currently under construction on Connor’s Point Industrial Park in Superior, adjacent to the Genesis Manufacturing plant where shears are built for excavators used in demolition and metal recycling.

Bruce Bacon, currently serving as Vice President and General Manager of Genesis, is the founder of Exodus Manufacturing. In January, Bacon will leave Genesis to work full time for the new company.

Bacon said the machines built in Superior would not be like any machines currently built for the scrap metal industry. The Exodus machines will look different and be built with different materials. In designing the new excavator the engineers focused on four areas:

• superior comfort for the operator
• raising the bar on safety
• easier maintenance
• superb after sales service

When production starts in May, the Exodus plant will employ 25 skilled workers. They will build the superstructure, do heavy fabrication, assembly and testing for the new machine. Bacon said he expects Exodus to employ 75 to 80 people within five years.

The Development Association played an active part in helping get Exodus Manufacturing off the ground.

“The amount of cooperation and support I received from the Development Association, the City of Superior and Douglas County was phenomenal,” said Bacon. “From helping locate a site to assisting with financial incentives, this community has shown that it is truly a Superior place in which to do business.”
